Appliance explainer
What an air fryer can actually remove from your week
A research-based guide to deciding whether a countertop appliance solves your problem—or just adds a new one.
The best appliance is the one that replaces a regular pain point, not the one with the longest box copy.
Start with the work, not the appliance
Air fryers use a compact, high-speed convection setup. They can be especially useful for reheating crisp foods, cooking frozen items, and handling small portions without heating a full oven.
That does not mean everyone needs one. The useful fit is a household that regularly wants quicker oven-style food and has enough counter or storage space to make the appliance easy to reach.
The questions worth asking
Before comparing brands, check whether the format matches how you eat.
- Will it fit your usual portion size?
- Is the basket easy enough to clean that you will use it?
- Does it replace an oven task you already dislike?
- Do you have a place to keep it accessible?
Avoid imaginary versatility
A long feature list is less valuable than a simple machine you will actually wash and use. Consider the repetitive job you want it to handle first; everything else is bonus material.
